Connection, confidence

A personal reflection shared with Sisterhood Support.

The Women’s group helped me connect with other group members online and face-to-face. The group dynamic differs from individual therapy in that it is a source of comfort and acknowledgement.

I appreciate this because it feels less isolating. The main benefit of meeting with my peers is that I can learn from various points of view and have a broader sense of what can be achieved emotionally as a full member of that community.

It also equalises my focus on self-advocacy and domestic abuse issues, which includes recognising the importance of prevention.

Finally, I would like to point out some of the skills I gained since my integration into the group:

  • speaking confidently within the context of a group

  • asserting boundaries and protecting my peace without the feeling of guilt

  • being curious about the impact of domestic violence on survivors

  • engaging with external bodies to be heard in relation to domestic abuse

  • spending time reflecting on my experience and setting goals suited to my needs
